York Shoestring Theatre at the Berlin Wall December 1977

Due Preparations for the Plague was loosely based on the book by Daniel Defoe at a time when there was a real nuclear threat (“Protect and Survive” leaflets plopped through our letterboxes). First performed at York University in March 1977 we toured to Palermo, Lyons, L’Aquila, Poznan and Cracow as well as Arts Centre York.

Production Manager for Cockpit Theatre, Marylebone (ILEA) 1979-1980

My first show at the Cockpit, THE YEAST FACTORY, by Alec Davidison involved raising both Donald Swann and his piano onto a scaffold platform way above the stage. Among the cast was a teenage Tim Roth. For the Mime Festival Ingenuity and speed were needed to accommodate the varying needs of many visiting international mime artists in the theatre. Youth Theatre Productions involved brightly painted, lightweight sets made from essentially thick cardboard.

Avon Touring Theatre Company 1980-1982

Avon Touring was a co-operative theatre company operating out of the top floor of MacArthur Warehouse on the Bristol Docks. On the van we carried sets for the adult show, BRITTLE GLORY by Vince Foxall and our schools’ show THE GOOD WOMAN OF SETZUAN by Bertolt Brecht.

Paines Plough Theatre Company 1982-1983

Breach of the Peace toured the UK with this collection of short pieces by established theatre writers responding to a time of unrest and disquiet. Acting company included Richard Jobson whose band, The Skids, were riding high at the time.

The Arvon Foundation at Lumb Bank 1983-1987

Co-Director with Maura Dooley programming an extensive range of residential writing courses (theatre, poetry, prose, beginners, songwriting etc) in an 18th Century Mill-Owner’s house in West Yorkshire, once the home of Ted Hughes. Some courses tailored for adults, some for young students.

Overseeing the Arts Council support for time-based visual artists and projects.

Bush Theatre 1989-1991 – Literary Manager

Literary Manager at the Bush Theatre, Shepherds Bush overseeing the development of new plays by Catherine Johnson (Boys Mean Business), Ted Moore (The Marshalling Yard), Roy Macgregor (Our Own Kind), Billy Roche (Poor Beast in the Rain). Working with Artistic Directors Brian Stirner and Nicky Pallot and then Dominic Dromgoole.
